Foot Ulcers

A foot ulcer is usually initiated by a minor trauma caused by foreign objects in shoes, barefoot walking, improperly fitted shoes and the decreased ability to feel pain particularly in diabetics. This minor incident leaves an open wound with no skin to protect the underlying structures from pressure effects or bacterial invasion. This small non healing wound is at risk to become progressively worse leading to a larger wound and/or develop gangrenous changes, disfiguring surgery and become a life time disability. It is important to close these small wounds quickly! For the patient, the relief from pain, discomfort, and independence that comes from the mobility associated with a quickly healed wound has a dramatic affect on the patients' lifestyle.

The Proxiderm is contra indicated for ischemic ulcers, an adequate blood supply to the affected area is mandatory. Non-weight bearing is essential during the Proxiderm procedure for wounds on the sole of the foot. While the Proxiderm closes the wound quickly, a wound will take at least 10-14 days to heal and approximately 3-6 weeks to bear the weight of a 180 to 200 lb. patient while walking. Earlier weight bearing can be DESTRUCTIVE. During this time period, the patient MUST off load the weight by crutches or wheel chair
